What Is Far Infrared Therapy?
"Far Infrared," also known as FIR, is a specific wavelength of light. FIR is outside of the visible spectrum, so we cannot detect it with our eyes. Instead, we feel it as heat. FIR energy transfers heat directly to your body, without heating the air between you and the source. Of the sun's radiant energy, FIR waves are the safest and the most beneficial.

Our sun produces most of its energy output in the infrared segment of the spectrum. In fact, infrared heat is what our bodies produce as cells burn fuel. This internal production of infrared energy is associated with a stimulation of the immune system and activation of healing mechanisms within the body.

Externally produced FIR rays (those from the sun, or from FIR devices or clothing) are selectively absorbed by the tissues that need a boost in their output. After boosting a tissue's level to maximum, the remaining rays pass onward harmlessly. This phenomenon is called "resonant absorption."

How Is FIR Energy Generated?

While the sun naturally generates FIR energy, it is not always possible, convenient or even advisable (due to the risk of UVB rays) to bask in sunlight as FIR therapy. Fortunately, a variety of naturally occuring minerals have an emission spectrum (they reflect energy) in the Far Infrared range. Artificially generated FIR is made possible by using these minerals to reflect or emit FIR energy. There are two basic types of FIR therapy: "passive" FIR therapy and "active" FIR therapy. Each has unique advantages and disadvantages.

"Passive" Far Infrared Therapy

Uses the heat of the body, rather than an
external energy source, to generate FIR.

Advantages:

1.  Very portable because it does not
     depend on external energy sources.

2.  Makes it easy to target individual
     joints or muscle groups.

3.  Users can enjoy long sessions while
     going about normal activities.

4.  Very affordable.

Disadvantages:

Treatment is less intense than "active" FIR
therapy, because the energy source is less
intense.

"Active" Far Infrared Therapy

Uses an external energy source (such
as electricity) to generate FIR.

Advantages:

Due to the external energy source,
therapy is more intense.

Disadvantages:

1.  Users must remain in one spot for
the duration of the therapy session.

2.  Devices can bulky and expensive.

3.  Going outside the home for treatments
     may be expensive, intimidating, or
     inconvenient.

4.  It is more difficult to target individual
     joints or muscles.

What FIR Energy Does

Fir energy penetrates 4-5 cm into the body and affects every living cell. Through molecular resonance, it produces warmth and a number of other benefits:

  • Releases nitric oxide, which helps expand blood
vessels and is also used by white blood cells to
        defend against tumours
  • Stimulates blood circulation
  • Relaxes muscle tissue
  • Stimulates the immune system
  • Increases metabolism
  • Promotes tissue regeneration
  • Activates enzymes within cells
  • Helps to eliminate waste such as heavy metals and
toxic substances, via sweat and dermis-layer fat
        glands

Be Careful!

The FIR spectrum is quite broad and at the high end, FIR energy is hot enough to cook with. The ideal therapeutic range is between 7 and 10 microns; make sure that any device you use is not generating higher frequencies that can damage proteins. In a variable temperature device, keep the temperature at or below 41 degrees Celcius (106 degrees Farenheit).
