What Are We Drinking?

We cook with it, we wash laundry in it, we bathe in it, we drink it. Water is essential to health in every way--in fact, we can only survive for a few days without it. How much do we know about this vital liquid? Is the water we're drinking as healthy as it can be and should be?

In general, water in North America is considered safe to drink. That is, we have sophisticated water processing plants that clean our water and treat it to kill bacteria. Some authorities even mount advertising campaigns to remind us that tap water is clean and safe to drink.

However, the water supplied to homes often has very

high levels of chlorine--sometimes more chlorine than swimming pool water! Other contaminants include lead, iron, volatile organic chemicals, traces of pesticides and environmental contaminants, and others too numerous to mention. Studies have linked chlorine and its by-products (e.g. trihalomethanes or THMs) to increased risk of rectal cancer, colon cancer, and bladder cancer.

As we try to remove toxic chemicals from our lives by choosing better quality personal care products, eliminating processed foods and avoiding toxic cleaning products, we also need to eliminate toxic chemicals from our water. While of course we need to drink water that is free from disease-causing bacteria, we also need to protect ourselves from the effects of chemicals that are biological poisons. Water that is full of chlorine does not taste very good, and contributes to the burden of toxicity that our bodies are accumulating.

For those concerned about the purity of the water they drink, there are many water filtering products on the market. Activated Carbon filters are popular, and good for removing most of the chlorine from water. Carbon-filtered water tastes better than straight tap water. However, the carbon filter does not remove bacteria, heavy metals, pesticides, and other contaminants (including THMs).

The most recent technology in water filtering takes even the finest particles out of the water. These "nano-filters" or "ultrafilters" remove residual pesticides, THMs and even the extremely tiny Polio and Ebola viruses. One such product, called the LifeSaver, is used in disaster zones to make contaminated local water safe to drink. We are in the process of testing a nano-filtration unit that in addition to filtering out contaminants, also ionizes and alkalyses the water. Watch for our assessment in a future newsletter!

Featured Oil:

Melaleuca

Also known as Tea Tree oil, Melaleuca oil is from Australia and has been used by the Aboriginals for thousands of years. Highly antiseptic, Melaleuca is a standard treatment in Australia for the treatment of wounds and prevention of infection. It was invaluable in field hospitals during World War II.

Melaleuca has been documented to kill many bacteria, viruses, and fungi on contact, and so is an excellent oil to have in your first aid kit. Use it on cuts and wounds to prevent infection, but be aware that it is also very effective for skin disorders, dandruff, nail fungi, athletes' foot, acne, thrush, herpes, and even gum inflammation. When diffused, Melaleuca supports the immune system.

Note: Melaleuca is toxic to cats and ferrets, but safe to use for horses and dogs.

Animal Aromatherapy

Like humans, animals respond well to aromatherapy.  Whether your animal suffers from nervousness, breathing problems, has a wart, a wound or some other health challenge, essential oils offer a natural, drug-free alternative that works really well. Watch this video of Cesar Milan (the Dog Whisperer) to see how quickly and gently essential oils work to calm a nervous animal.

We are pleased to announce that after nearly a year of studying essential oils and their properties, Oasis Energy Therapy owner Cynthia Incze is now qualified to offer services as a Certified Animal Aromatherapist. A lifelong animal lover, Cynthia owns two dogs and a horse, and has had plenty of practical experience in using essential oils with animals.

  Recipe of the Month

Gluten Free Chocolate Chunk Cookies

This recipe sounds too easy to be true, but it works and it's really, really good. We found it in the March 2010 issue of Clean Eating Magazine. Enjoy!

1 cup almond butter (salt and sugar free)

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt (if desired)

1/2 cup Sucanat

3 oz dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces

1 large egg

Combine first 4 ingredients in a bowl, combining well. Add egg and stir in. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and drop cookies in rounded tablespoons onto the sheet. Bake at 350F for 12 minutes.
